SB 5291 offers important updates to the WA Cares Program:
- Enable people who opted out of the program to opt back in to WA Cares (thousands of people have asked to do so!)
- Allow people to take as much time off as they need in between jobs and still be eligible to apply for benefits when they need them
- Make affordable supplemental insurance available for those who want more coverage
SJR 8201 will:
- Ensure maximum return on investments for Washington’s long term care benefits fund.
- Secure the fund’s long term financial stability.
Since WA Cares was launched, lawmakers have already expanded exemptions, expanded coverage to people who were disabled under the age of 18, extended coverage to near-retirees, and made our benefits portable, so we can keep them even if we move out of state someday.
SB 5291 & SJR 8201’s proposed changes will strengthen WA Cares even further, allowing more of us to access this crucial long-term care benefit when we need it most.
